Tech blanks Baylor to win softball series finale

WACO — Olivia Rains and Kendall Fritz combined on a five-hitter and Texas Tech salvaged the finale of a three-game Big 12 softball series with a 2-0 victory Sunday.

All three games of the series were shutouts. Baylor (25-19, 4-8) won the first two 1-0 and 4-0 and took a five-game win streak into Sunday. Tech (22-23, 5-10) snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kennedy Crites and Payton Jackson singled home the game’s only runs in the fourth inning. Crites finished 3 for 3.

Rains (1-6) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and four walks. Fritz pitched the last 1 2/3 for her first save, allowing one hit and one walk.

Baylor starter Dariana Orme (11-11), who shut out the Red Raiders in the series opener, took the loss.

Women’s golf

HOCKLEY — Amy Taylor and Chiara Horder posted top-20 finishes individually, but Texas Tech finished eighth out of nine teams in the Big 12 tournament that concluded Sunday at The Clubs at Houston Oaks.

Tech opened with a round of 12 over par on Friday, then shot 24-over and 25-over on the weekend. Texas won at 24-over, followed by Baylor and Oklahoma State at 27-over. Rounding out the top five were Iowa State at 35-over and TCU at 39-over.

Taylor (73-75-75) tied for 13th place at 10-over, and Horder (71-77-77) tied for 19th. Also playing for the Red Raiders were Anna Dong (75-75-79), Gala Dumez (77-81-78) and Chelsea Romas (84-85-81).

Frenship graduate Haley Vargas, playing for Kansas State, shot 74-78-74, the best score for the Wildcats.

Oklahoma State’s Lianna Bailey (70-68-77) was the tournament medalist at 2-over, winning by one stroke over Baylor’s Addie Baggarly (69-77-70).
